The role of the biological safety service is to advise the scientists on the planning, application and implementation of genetic engineering work. Most of the work consists of subjecting organisms to a risk assessment or assigning genetic engineering work to a safety level and, if necessary, making separate proposals for safety measures. Genetic engineering work is the production or handling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), e.g. when conducting scientific experiments in laboratories. Any application for genetic engineering work can only be forwarded to the authorities of Saxony via the Biosafety Officer.
