Mandatory Health Insurance

Health insurance is always required for a visa, residence permit, university enrollment, or employment and mandatory for everyone living in Germany.

Most employees and students are covered by Germany’s statutory health insurance system. A confirmation for visa purposes can be requested in advance.

Please note that statutory health insurance only becomes valid once your employment begins.

If you arrive before your contract start date, it is advisable to take out travel health insurance.
For visa purposes, the travel insurance must meet specific requirements: it should be valid throughout the Schengen Area, cover emergency medical treatment, hospital care, and repatriation in case of serious illness. A minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 is typically required, with low or no deductible recommended. It must also cover the entire period until statutory health insurance begins and be accepted by German diplomatic missions abroad.

More information about health insurance options, registration, and choosing a provider can be found on our Insurance page. Our office will provide detailed information on statutory versus private insurance options, assists in preparing required documentation, and connects newcomers with suitable providers.
