Marino Zerial elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

MPI-CBG director becomes International Honorary Member of one of the oldest learned societies in the United States.

Marino Zerial, the current managing director of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden has been elected International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The Academy President David W. Oxtoby and Chair of the Board of Directors Nancy C. Andrews have announced that 252 outstanding individuals have been elected to the Academy in 2021. The 2021 election provides an opportunity to recognize extraordinary people who help solve the world’s most urgent challenges, create meaning through art, and contribute to the common good from every field, discipline, and profession. The current members represent today’s innovative thinkers in every field and profession, including more than two hundred and fifty Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners.

With his election, Marino Zerial joins the company of notable members such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Jonas Salk, John F. Kennedy, or Martin Luther King, Jr. International Members include Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Laurence Olivier, Mary Leakey, John Maynard Keynes, Akira Kurosawa, and Nelson Mandela.

The Academy was established in 1780 by the founders of the Unites States of America to provide guidance to a young nation that would face challenges and need expertise and excellence to emerge stronger. It honors excellence and convenes leaders from every field of human endeavor to examine new ideas, address issues of importance to the nation and the world. The studies of the Academy have helped set the direction of research and analysis in science and technology policy, global security and international affairs, social policy, education, and the humanities.
