The European Research Council (ERC) has selected 406 early-career top researchers from 48 nationalities across Europe out of 3085 submissions in the 2017 'Starting Grant' competition. The total budget is € 605 million which is granted to projects in the areas of Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences, and Social Sciences and Humanities. These grants will enable researchers and their groups to pursue ground-breaking ideas.
Among them are André Nadler, research group leader at the MPI-CBG and Barbara Treutlein, jointly affiliated research group leader of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig and the MPI-CBG. With the project „ Lipid asymmetry: a cellular battery?“, André and his research group aim to break new ground in explaining one of the least understood features of the plasma membrane and plan to pave the way for a new, dynamic membrane model. Barbara Treutlein received the starting grant for her project: “Reconstructing human cortex development and malformation with single-cell transcriptomics.” The vision of Barbara is to gain groundbreaking insight into mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental diseases by building models of the development of a cortex – the largest region of the mammalian brain – by measuring the expression and function of genes in thousands of single cells.
The Nadler and the Treutlein groups will receive 1.5 million Euro each from the ERC over a period of five years. Congratulations!
