SCIENCE CAFÉ: Academese or Science Slam?

How to communicate science

4 September 2012, 19:00, Cafe Lingner (at Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden)

free admission

We live in a knowledge-based society. There are popular science magazines, science TV programs at prime time. We expecte an answer from scientists on what is the perfect way of life, guaranteeing a long, healthy, successful life.

Doesn't that make science merely a service provider? Does the fight for publicity, for better funding and career chances force scientists into marketing their science? Doesn't science depend on public control, need ethical debates in order to remain a humane discipline? How does the public deal with unpleasant, controversial and uncertain findings about climate change, risks of new technologies, or the shortage of resources? Can we deal with this overload of knowledge?

You can discuss these and all questions you may have with experts in a relaxed atmosphere while having drinks and snacks. There is no podium – just plenty of opportunities for discussions at all tables. You are welcome to join the Science Café discussion - come and tell us what you think!

Experts are:
