Outstanding accomplishments in light sheet microscopy

Jan Huisken receives Medal for Light Microscopy

The Royal Microscopical Society (RMS) has announced the winners for its 2017 Medal series: Among them is MPI-CBG research group leader Jan Huisken, who received the RMS Medal for Light Microscopy for outstanding scientific achievements applying or developing new forms of light microscopy. Along with his co-workers, Jan Huisken introduced light sheet microscopy (or selective plane illumination microscopy) to the field of biological imaging in 2004. This new approach has since then replaced confocal and two-photon microscopy in many applications and, as the jury emphasizes, "revolutionized in vivo whole embryo imaging".

The series of Medals was launched by the RMS in 2014 in order to recognise and celebrate individuals who make outstanding contributions to the field of microscopy across both the life and physical sciences.
