Biochemist Jonathan Rodenfels joined the MPI-CBG research faculty in January. His research will focus on understanding how energetics shape the behavior of biological systems and how cells and organisms use energy to stay alive, grow, and develop. Jonathan and his group aim to develop non-invasive approaches to quantitatively measure the heat exchanged between biological systems and their environment.
Jonathan studied Biochemistry at the University of Bayreuth on the topic of “The role of prohibitins in biogenesis and function of mitochondria.” For his PhD, he came to the MPI-CBG in 2008. In the research lab of Suzanne Eaton, he investigated systemically circulating Hedgehog in Drosophila. Jonathan then moved to the Yale University in 2014 as postdoctoral researcher in the lab of Karla Neugebauer to study the energetics of early embryonic development. Now, he is at the MPI-CBG again as a research group leader: “I am very happy to be back. It’s a new chapter of my life, and I am excited to be here“, he says.
