Steve Briscoe, postdoc in the research lab of Wieland Huttner at the MPI-CBG, received a Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and an EMBO Long-Term Fellowship. Steve’s research will be supported by the Humboldt Foundation for six months and then by the EMBO fellowship for an additional two years. Steve received his PhD from the University of Chicago, where he studied the evolution of the forebrain in vertebrates including mammals, reptiles, and birds. Steve explains: “At the MPI-CBG, I will study the expansion of the neocortex during development and evolution, with a focus on the human-specific cell biology of neocortical neural progenitors. This research may help to explain how the human neocortex nearly tripled in size over the last two million years of evolution.”

A Humboldt Research Fellowship allows postdoctoral researchers to carry out long-term research of 6-24 months in Germany. The EMBO Long-Term Fellowships are awarded for a period of up to two years and support post-doctoral research visits to laboratories throughout Europe and the world. International exchange is a key feature in the application process.
