ERC Starting Grant for Moritz Kreysing to create GHOSTs

Uncovering the genetic basis of tissue transparency

The European Research Council (ERC) has selected 408 early-career top researchers from 51 nationalities across Europe in the 2019 'Starting Grant' competition. The grants, worth in total 621 million Euros, are part of the EU’ Research and Innovation programme, Horizon 2020.  Projects are funded in the areas of Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences, and Social Sciences, and Humanities. These prestigious grants will enable researchers and their groups to build their own research teams and pursue ground-breaking ideas.
 
Among the awardees is Moritz Kreysing, research group leader at the MPI-CBG and member of the Center for Systems Biology Dresden. With the project „Genetically enhanced, optically superior tissues (GHOSTS)”, Moritz and his research group aim to uncover the genetic basis of tissue transparency, such that living cells, tissue cultures and organisms can be optically cleared for light microscopy. For this, the Kreysing lab will combine insights into the origins of retina transparency, and a unique set of methods, to answer the question how cells become more transparent during directed evolution.

Moritz Kreysing will receive 1.5 million Euros from the ERC over a period of five years. Congratulations Kreysing lab!
