It’s been four years ago that Ivo Sbalzarini, Professor of Scientific Computing for Systems Biology at the TU Dresden and director at the Center for Systems Biology Dresden, initiated a new, international Master’s program at the TU Dresden. After an extensive period of planning and preparation, the curriculum in “Computational Modeling and Simulation” (CMS) is finally starting with its first application round for the winter semester 2018/2019.
The Master’s program is a joint curriculum between the Faculty of Computer Science, the Faculty of Mathematics, and the Center for Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering (CMCB) with Medicine, Psychology, Mechanical Engineering, and Economics participating. Students benefit from the interdisciplinary training and multiple synergies.
Sbalzarini, who is also a research group leader at MPI-CBG, says: “With this program, Dresden is at the forefront of education in computational modeling and simulation. There are only few programs that can offer such a wide scope of possible topics. I am very proud of my colleagues and of the university that they all worked together to make this happen.”
The four-semester program caters to the increasing importance of computer simulations and computer-aided modelling in all areas of science and technology. In the new program, computational modelling (machine learning and data analysis) and computer simulation (numerical methods, high-performance computing) are combined, guaranteeing a strong, future-oriented education. The specialization in five application-specific tracks offers a unique flexibility to students.
The strongly research-oriented program also offers the possibility to fast-track into a structured PhD program, such as the International Max Planck Research School for Cell, Developmental, and Systems Biology at the CSBD and the MPI-CBG, providing a combined M.Sc./Ph.D. perspective.
