Juniordoktor 2013/2014

Science presentations for kids

Interested in getting a Junior PhD? It's easy: You will have to visit a number of Dresden research institutions in the natural sciences, medicine, or art field and collect stamps for all stations in your junior PhD pass. Of course, the MPI-CBG supports this project and is one of these stations, offering the presentations listed below.

After that, you will have to give correct answers to a number of questions on the research you looked deeper into. If you meet all these requirements, you will get your Junior PhD, together with a certificate and even a doctoral cap!

Who can join? - Students attending grade 3-12

A worm welcome! What worm embryos can tell us (grade 9-12)

A seminar by Anne-Cecile Reymann. We can learn a lot from the early stages of life of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans: The embryo is a bunch of cells under tension and developing tissue in constant move. How can we measure biophysical parameters such as flow velocity and alignment, or tension? How can we describe the mechanical basis of these cell biological events? You will learn about the theory and the experiments we do.

Fische, Fliegen, Fadenwürmer (grade 3-5)

A guided tour of the MPI-CBG. You will learn how scientists work and why we have showers in the labs, see the fish facility with zebrafish in 2,500 tanks and feel how cold a cold room is. Also, you will be able to observe worms under the microscope and try some pipetting.

Aus 120000000000000 mach 1! - Wie Zellen ein Ganzes bilden (grade 6-8)

A guided tour of the MPI-CBG. Unnaturally-colored neon fish. A room filled with rows upon rows of deep blue tanks. Minuscule worms crawling under the gaze of a microscope lens. And a beautiful rooftop view of the castles along the Elbe River Valley. Look behind the scenes of modern research, learn more about what scientific research really means, and watch scientists at work.
