Recognition of certificates

Personal Certificates

If you plan to move to Germany, you may need officially recognized documents such as birth, marriage, or divorce certificates, as well as academic qualifications. Depending on your country of origin and the purpose of the document, German authorities may require a certified translation and, in many cases, an apostille or legalisation to confirm authenticity.

In addition, official German translation and formal recognition may be required. If you are unsure what applies in your case, please get in touch with us—we will be happy to help you clarify what is needed and support you with the process.

Academic Qualifications

As part of the enrolment process, PhD students must submit certified copies of their degree certificates and academic transcripts to TU Dresden. Please make sure to bring all original certificates and supporting documents with you to Dresden. Certified copies can usually be obtained locally in Dresden, for example through an English-speaking notary. The PhD Office will be happy to provide guidance and support throughout the process.

In addition, your academic qualifications may need to be formally recognised in Germany, depending on your country of origin and their intended use. This may include certified translations and, in some cases, an apostille or legalisation to confirm authenticity. Requirements vary, and we will help you identify what applies in your individual case.
