The Automated Biology Facility develops custom, end-to-end experimental workflows for biological research. We combine robotics, quantitative imaging, data analysis and predictive modelling to make complex experiments reproducible, scalable and information-rich.

How to get started

The facility works with research groups at MPI-CBG to identify experiments in which automation can unlock new scientific possibilities. Projects typically start with a biological question or a routine workflow that is limited by throughput, reproducibility, timing or complexity.

Please contact us at an early stage.

What we provide

  • Workflow development for complex, multi-step biological experiments
  • Routine automation for standard workflows
  • Hardware and software integration across sample handling, perturbation, imaging and analysis
  • Quantitative and traceable data pipelines with consistent metadata and quality control
  • Connection to predictive models and, where useful, adaptive or closed-loop experimentation
  • Transfer to user-led operation through validation, documentation and hands-on training

Operational model

We develop projects jointly with the participating research group and the relevant scientific services. The scope and expected outcome are agreed before substantial development begins, with regular scientific and technical reviews throughout the project.
