Once you have received the keys to your new apartment, there are a few important steps to complete. The International Office supports you throughout this process and can take care of many administrative tasks on your behalf or assist you in completing them. Our goal is to help you avoid unpleasant surprises and ensure a smooth start in your new home.
- Handover protocol (Übergabeprotokoll): When moving in, complete a handover protocol together with your landlord. It documents the condition of the apartment, including any existing damages and meter readings. Take photos and keep a copy ofthe signed document to avoid disputes when moving out.
- Set up utilities and internet: Electricity and internet should be arranged as soon as possible. Many providers allow you to set up contracts before moving in. TheInternational Office can support you with this process.
- Register your new address (Ummeldung): Within 14 days of moving in, you must register your new address at the local Bürgeramt. You will need your ID and the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from your landlord. The International Office can take care of this registration for you.
- Register for the broadcasting fee (Rundfunkbeitrag): Every household in Germany must pay this monthly fee, regardless of whether you use a TV or radio. The International Office can assist you with the registration to avoid missed payments.
- Get liability insurance: Private liability insurance is strongly recommended, as it covers accidental damage to your apartment or other people’s property.
- Never pay rent, deposits, or fees before signing a rental contract and receiving the keys. Apartment viewings are free of charge. Be cautious if someone asks for advance payments or pressures you to transfer money, as this may indicate a scam.
