The mission of the Light Microscopy Facility (LMF) is to provide access to state-of-the-art light microscopy techniques and instruments along with vision toward future trends. We assist through consultation, training and project collaborations.

Facility and Service:

The LMF is open to everybody who is interested to use our service. All users are asked to contact lmfmpi-cbg.de first and to describe their imaging project. After an introduction to the Facility, users can book instruments and assistance via the LMF booking database. In the field of image analysis LMF closely cooperates with the Image Processing Facility.

Instruments currently available:

8 Confocal systems

  • Inverted and upright
  • Various laser and scanhead combinations
  • 2-photon system
  • Spinning disc system
  • Systems for laser ablation and bleaching

7 Wide-field systems

  • Inverted and upright
  • CCD cameras for brightfield and fluorescence
  • Systems for long-term time-lapse imaging of live cells
  • TIRF system

Workstations for image processing and data analysis

  • Deconvolution
  • 3D volume rendering
  • Tracking
  • Processing of big image files

In order to help users find the microscope setup and data analysis approach which best fits their needs, the Biopolis Dresden Imaging Platform (BioDIP) operates as a resource and information sharing cooperation between the light and electron microscopy facilities at the MPI-CBG (including the Image Processing Facility, IPF), the Medical Theoretical Center (MTZ), the Bioinnovation Center (BIOZ) and the Center for Regenerative Therapies (CRTD) of the TU Dresden and the DZNE.
