Facility Leader, Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting (‘FACS’) scientific core facility

The FACS Facility is part of the comprehensive suite of scientific core facilities of the MPI-CBG, responsible for providing cell sorting and analysis capabilities realizing the full potential offered by the technology to support the research programs and activities ongoing at the institute.

MPI-CBG is an institute of the renowned Max Planck Society conducting ground-breaking biomedical research at the forefront of the current state-of-the-art. The institute has won several prizes for its family friendly culture and for creating an optimal work environment.
The question posed for the first 20 years since the institute’s founding has been ‘how do cells form tissues’? The institute has recently further developed its research vision and adopted stem cell-derived models, synthetic tissue systems and organoids models to address its fundamental questions in developmental biology, regeneration self-organization and molecular genetics. The institute is well known for an interdisciplinary approach including consideration of the role of force, size, shape and other physical parameters on cell and tissue organization and also, in 2017, has opened a new Center for Systems Biology Dresden (‘CSBD’) providing a rich environment for theoretical approaches, modelling and simulation.

Main tasks and responsibilities:
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong background in FACS techniques acquired either in a clinical or basic research environment. As leader of the facility, the successful candidate will manage a small team providing:

  • Consultation and counselling for users on machine usage, experimental design, and method application and validation.
  • Scheduling, planning, and performance of user requests, such as cell sorts, cell analyses, and data analysis using instrumentation specific software.
  • Training of users on flow cytometry machines and software and on-site consultation.
  • Continuous development of the facility conceptually and technologically.
  • Development and maintenance of a protocol repository to accompany user consultations.
  • Organisation of workshops and trainings on the newest flow cytometry concepts.
  • Maintenance, administration, and care of highly complex flow cytometry instrumentation.

Your qualifications:

  • University degree (PhD or MSc) preferably in biology or related field
  • Experience in running a biological lab, including personnel management, ideally in a service role.
  • Extensive experience in handling biological samples, a diverse spectrum of biological and biochemical methods, especially experience with flow cytometry workflows (e.g. cell culturing and performance and analysis of multi-color-FACS staining).
  • Extensive experience in operating and technically understanding FACS instrumentation including Becton Dickinson and Sony flow cytometers (Aria, MA900, SA3800), and FACS data analysis with specific FACS software, e.g. FlowJo.
  • Excellent English skills both in writing and speech.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead a team and simultaneously work very closely as a part of the team.

Our offer:
The position is available immediately. The initial contract is for 2 years with the possibility to be extended. Salary depends on qualification and experience and will be in accordance with the regulations of the German TVöD Bund (salary agreement for public service employees).
