Axon Extension occurs Independently of Centrosomal Microtubule Nucleation

Microtubules are small protein cylinders which support a cell's shape. Microtubules are also essential for a cell's growth and division process - functions, which are impaired in adult nerve cells. Scientists of the MPI of Neurobiology in Martinsried and the Dresden MPI-CBG could now disprove the general opinion that microtubules are assembled only at a specific site within the cell (Science, January 8, 2010).
