Biomolecular Transport Systems in Cell Biology and Nanotechnology

The European Research Council (ERC) announced the outcome of its second competition for Starting Investigator Grants. Out of 2503 submissions, the ERC will fund 240 proposals (by principal investigators from 33 nationalities) at host institutions in 19 different countries. Among them is Stefan Diez, MPI-CBG research group leader, with his project "NanoTrans - Biomolecular Transport Systems in Cell Biology and Nanotechnology”.

This research proposal focuses on understanding intracellular transport driven by molecular motors. Towards this goal, the group will develop novel in vitro reconsitution assays of subcellular mechanical systems in conjunction with innovative optical single molecule techniques. “A second goal is to use the insight from cellular systems to operate biomolecular motor systems in engineered environments for the fulfillment of complex nanotechnological tasks”, says Stefan Diez. His group received an ERC Starting Grant of approximately 2 million Euros for five years.
