Les Neiges du Kilimandjaro - The Snows of Kilimanjaro

(France 2011) - original French version with German subtitles -

Michel is a blue collar worker at a company in the port of Marseille, and takes pride in his 'being good'. He has always tried to be a responsible citizen, and is one of the union representatives in his company. When the company has to lay off twenty workers, Michel proposes to organize a lottery and puts his own name on the list, although as a union man he is not obliged to. Michel loses his job, and soon afterward gets robbed in his own house. By coincidence, he learns the identity of the criminals, and they are arrested. The events connected with the robbery make him doubt his own 'goodness'. A confrontation with one of the robbers puts everything he thought to know in a different perspective: Michel recognizes that he has become 'bourgeois'. His supposed 'goodness' turns out quite differently than he thought.

This charming movie turns things upside down and asks interesting questions, but doesn't give clear cut answers. Michel is 'good', but not as good as he thought. And the thief is 'bad', but not as bas as it seems. The story zigzags nicely between the moral dilemmas, and never becomes heavy-handed. The overall tone is upbeat, and especially the end scenes are almost heartbreakingly optimistic.

At the same time, Morris's negotiations for the endorsement of the man in third place, a North Carolina Senator, hit a snag. A young campaign intern, Molly Stearns, gets Stephen's romantic attention. Republicans have a trick up their sleeves, Stephen may be too trusting, and Molly has a secret. What's most important: career, victory, or virtue?

Empire Me

(Austria/Luxembourg/Germany 2011) - original English version with German subtitles -

Handmade utopias - a filmic search for the worldwide phenomenon of the micronation movement. Do-it-yourself states that have distanced themselves from the economic and political mainstreaming of globalization. A road movie covering land, water and the wildest realms of the imagination. Simultaneously creative documentary and pulsating cultural portrait, the film traces a new "unplugged" generation - their motives, their anxieties and their dreams. A film that shows how this generation realizes its escapist fantasies in new economic and political forms and how they collide with oppressive everyday realities.

The Princess and the Pea

The king and queen have grown old and the prince is still without a bride. One stormy night a girl appears bedraggled and grimy, claiming to be a princess. For the prince it is love at first sight – but what if the stranger is not the princess she claims to be? She must be put to the test, and what better way than by placing a pea between the mattresses of her bed. Because, of course, for a real princess, this would mean discomfort …

The short opera by Ernst Toch was premiered in 1927.

For kids from 6.
Running time: 45 mins.

Though a production of the Semperoper Opera, the opera is staged at Hygiene-Museum!
