Driving

Driving in Germany

UP TO ONE YEAR IN JAIL
UP TO 25,000 € FINES
AND PAYING ACCIDENT COSTS OUT OF YOUR OWN POCKET

...are in fact the consequences of driving without and without a valid driver's license!!!

Therefore we would like to draw your attention to the very necessity of getting a German driver's license (Führerschein).

driver's license

Please note that with only a few exceptions, you must be holder of a German driver's license after 6 months of first becoming a permanent resident in Germany! Depending on your country of origin, the procedure of getting a new driver's license can take up to 3 months. To avoid any legal complications, apply for your German driver's license after you finished your permit application.

For all holders of a foreign driver's license (including EU) please contact the International Office for further advice. Please supply information about the issuing state of your foreign driver's license and the date you were registered in Germany for the first time. If you already have a valid EU driver's license, it should be valid for Germany. There are minor exceptions: e.g. if you are holder of truck or motorbike classes or for certain age groups.

So for your security, contact the International Office and have your current driver's license checked. All you need is a little paperwork and you will be holder of a German driver's license (Führerschein) preventing any legal complications.
