International Office

Formalities upon arrival

Registration

Within two weeks after arriving in Dresden, everyone has to get registered with the Residents’ Registration Office. You can get the form in the International Office and leave your passport there for registration. Any change of residence within the same city has to be registered with the Residents’ Registration Office. If you move out of Germany you will have to cancel your registration in Dresden.

Residence Permit

Newcomers immediately have to get an appointment at the Immigration office immediately after arriving to apply for a residence permit. This can be done by the International Office at MPI-CBG.

EU citizens:
EU citizens receive a residence permit, which is a work permit at the same time.
The so-called “EU-Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung” can be obtained after arrival and usually has unlimited validity.

Necessary documents:

  • copy of working contract
  • proof of Health Insurance
  • passport photo

Non-EU citizens:
After your arrival you have to contact the International Office or the Immigration office directly for an appointment in order to apply for a residence permit.

Necessary documents:

  • copy of working contract
  • proof of Health Insurance
  • passport photo
  • rental contract
  • marriage certificate
  • birth certificates of children
  • application form
  • valid passport

Extension of Residence Permit

From 1 September 2011, the new Electronic Residence Permit (eAT)  replaces  the stamp put in the passport.

For the extension of the residence permit you will get a notification by the Immigration office about 6 or 8 weeks before your current residence permit expires.

Once you receive a personal appointment, it is necessary to come to the this appointment. If you really cannot make the date, please reply to the corresponding e-mail (on the letter) immediately to get a new one (or let the International Office know).  Please don’t ignore the letter!

Template text for a notification if you really cannot go there due to a conference/travel and want to ask for a new appointment:

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, leider kann ich aufgrund der Teilnahme an einer Konferenz/Dienstreise den Termin nicht warhnehmen und bitte um Zusendung eines neuen Termins.

Work Permit

EU citizens:
The work permit is part of the "EU-Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung". There is no separate work permit.

Non-EU citizens:
The work permit is part of the residence permit. The foreign office will check fulfillment of the necessary conditions while processing the residence permit and will not issue a separate work permit.
